Rape Redefined

This is one of the most irresponsible proposals I have heard of to date. The “No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act” proposes that women who are victims of rape or incest and seek to get an abortion will not be covered by Medicad under certain circumstances. Republicans are insisting that the rape must be constituted by the use of force in order for a woman’s abortion to be covered by Medicad. “Rape is only really rape if it involves force” according to the new House Republican majority .

This proposed legislation by Rep. Chris Smith (R-N.J.) would also limit many other protections. A woman that is drugged or given excessive amounts of alcohol,  or suffers from a limited mental capacity, as well as cases of date rape all would not be covered under this law. In cases of incest the law would only cover women under the age of 18.

The controversal “forcible rape” provision was removed from the proposed law, but Democarts argue that the language is still too vague and could potentially leave women without the protection they should have.
